Hello and welcome to Bring Your Own – The Pennsylvania Wanderer’s newest feature. In this series I’ll feature some of the restaurants that Brenda and I visit that allow people to bring their own wine. We love BYOB restaurants because they allow us to enjoy some great food and wine without breaking the budget. We all know how fast a restaurant bill can grow when the wine is $7.oo or more per glass. A BYOB restaurant offers a great alternative for the wine lover on a budget. So get out your wine carrier or wine tote and get ready to follow The Pennsylvania Wanderer.
Davenport’s Italian Oven in Mechanicsburg, PA is a traditional Italian restaurant that offers good food at reasonable prices in a comfortable, family atmosphere. We’ve been there many times and have never left feeling like we didn’t have a great meal. Every Monday and Tuesday are “A Lotta Pasta” nights where all the pasta you want to enjoy is just $8.75. You can have linguine, penne, fettuccine, or angel hair topped with their marinara, savory meat, basil pesto or Alfredo sauces. This feature comes with unlimited salad and Italian bread.
The Italian Oven offers specialty items on each part of the menu. Among the specialty appetizers are a fried zucchini with Romano cheese and a zesty horseradish sauce, a garlic bread topped with four cheeses and marinated grilled vegetables in a balsamic dressing that are chilled and served with marinara sauce. Each of these appetizers is less than $6.00.
The pasta specialties include penne with meat sauce and cheese that’s baked to perfection (my personal favorite) for $11.45. You can add sauteed shrimp for another $2.50. Another specialty is “Our Italian Oven Trio Platter” that includes layers of lasagna, creamy fettuccine Alfredo and oven baked Chicken Breast topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese for $13.95.
The Italian Oven also features include a Fettuccine Davenporto (fettuccine with chicken, mushrooms and roasted red peppers in an Alfredo sauce) and Mediterranean Sea Scallops (Italian ham & sea scallops in a sun dried tomato Alfredo sauce over penne pasta). They also feature a variety of pizzas baked in their brick oven and a selection of strombolis and calzones.
We always find the service at The Italian Oven to be exceptional. They are more than willing to provide wine glasses and a corkscrew to their BYOB guests. They also have a banquet room that’s available free of charge for large group events. Call 717-697-6836 for more information.
The Italian Oven is located in the Windsor Park Shopping Center on Simpson Ferry Road in Mechanicsburg. They have a second location in the Capital City Mall which has a full service bar and therefore does not allow you to bring your own wine.
Have a great time at The Italian Oven and don’t forget to tell them that The Pennsylvania Wanderer sent you!
